RANGE OF EXPERIENCE

 

Experienced professional auditor with skills in fraud auditing, compliance auditing, and analysis of financial data. Has served as a financial consultant to numerous sports unions regarding the analysis of revenues and expenses of Teams and Leagues and regarding design of audit programs and strategies for the monitoring of revenue sharing agreements between the Leagues and their players. Audits of sports teams has included reviews of commissions paid on the sale of broadcasting air time, stadium and arena signage, concessions and other inventories of the respective franchise. Fraud auditing clients have included financial institutions, professional athletes, non-profit organizations and attorneys. Experience includes over 25 years as a fraud investigator including 17 years of criminal investigations experience with the federal government, including determining compliance with laws and regulations (FBI, FEMA, and IRS).

 

Sports clients have included unions representing players in the following leagues:

PROFESSIONAL AND BUSINESS HISTORY

 

January, 1982 to Present:  Bennett Hutt & Company, LLC

Partner in the firm's Albuquerque, NM office. Specializing in fraud auditing, sports consulting and individual income taxes. Helps professional sports unions to understand finances of their Leagues and Teams in order to negotiate equitable collective bargaining agreements. Assists in the design and monitoring of the agreements. Consults with professional athletes regarding tax and financial planning. Conducts fraud audits for businesses and individuals.

 

 

PROFESSIONAL AND BUSINESS HISTORY - Cont'd

 

1983 to 1997:  Special Agent - Federal Emergency Management Agency (OIG) (Disaster Assistance Employee)

Conducted federal investigations involving Fraud against the Government and False Claims related to disaster clean-up activities across the United States and in the Caribbean islands. Designed control systems to minimize fraud in disaster programs and wrote the first FEMA-OIG guidelines on investigating debris removal fraud. Supervised over 20 special agents working fraud cases during Hurricane Andrew in Miami. Assisted in the training of new agents. Coordinated joint investigative efforts with the FBI, IRS, and local agencies.

 

1982 to 1983:  Adjunct Accounting Professor - University of New Mexico

Taught a required course in financial accounting to business school students. Course emphasized recording of transactions and financial statement preparation.

 

1979 to 1982:  Special Agent (Accountant) - Federal Bureau of Investigation

Conducted white-collar crime investigations in the Albuquerque and New York City field offices of the FBI that resulted in numerous convictions, plea agreements and recoveries. Major cases involved bank fraud, fraud against the government, false claims, mail fraud, and price-fixing. Received a letter of commendation for revising accounting procedures over local field office funds to enhance reporting accuracy and enhance internal controls.

 

1978 to 1979:  Accounting Instructor - Missouri Baptist College

Taught an introductory level accounting course.

 

1976 to 1979:  Auditor - Ernst & Ernst, CPAs

Conducted financial audits of businesses, governmental entities and non-profit organizations. Trained and supervised new staff accountants.

Mr. Bennett's forensic auditing work in the professional sports industry has been the subject of numerous articles published in major news publications including; USA Today, Sports Illustrated, Sports Business Journal and the Wall Street Journal.

Lectures on fraud auditing presented to numerous professional accounting organizations and has conducted a fraud training seminar for auditors of the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Division. Presentations on fraud auditing and deterrence have also been given to the following groups:
